About Humainify

A business advisory practice
for leaders who know
people make strategy work.

Founded by Trent McHugh and Cathy Gray, Humainify is a business advisory practice helping Australian SMEs and organisations build strategic clarity, AI ready teams, and the operational foundations to grow. Built on the HEART Framework.

Why We Exist

Built from two decades of practice

Most AI consultants arrive from a technology background. Most business advisors arrive from finance or strategy. And most HR consultants have never had to execute the strategy they helped design. Humainify was built by people who came from none of those positions. They spent decades inside complex organisations at every level, from frontline to executive.

That experience showed something consistent: organisations with genuine ambition and committed people were still falling short. Not because they lacked good intentions, but because their strategy, their culture, and their systems were not working together. No single advisor was helping them see the whole picture.

The arrival of AI made that gap more urgent and more consequential. Humainify was the response: a business advisory practice that addresses strategy, people, and AI adoption together. It is grounded in evidence, built on genuine sector experience, and focused on building capability that lasts.

The Team

Meet the founders

Two practitioners. Twenty plus years of combined experience. One shared belief: that sustainable business performance only comes when people, strategy, and operations are held in balance.

Trent McHugh
Co-Founder
Launceston, Tasmania

Trent's career spans twenty years across commercial operations, health services, and business advisory, from frontline practice through to executive leadership and board governance. That range is the foundation of Humainify's practical grounding, and what distinguishes his advisory work from those who arrived from finance, technology, or HR consulting.

As COO of St John Ambulance Tasmania, Trent held P&L responsibility for the organisation's commercial services divisions, including first aid training programs, event medical services, and retail operations. Running revenue generating businesses within a complex, mission driven organisation gave him the commercial and operational instincts that most advisors simply do not carry. As CEO of Independent Living Centre Tasmania, he grew a small clinical team into a multi region service, navigating the people, systems, and strategic challenges that come with genuine organisational growth.

Earlier in his career, Trent worked in mental health and disability services across New Zealand and Australia, building the frontline perspective that shapes everything he does as an advisor today. He holds an MBA and Diploma in Business Advisory (Australian Institute of Management), a Certificate in Governance for Not-for-Profit organisations, and a Certification in Emerging Technologies and Digital Leadership. He is a Certified Business Advisor through the Institute of Advisors.

Trent founded Humainify alongside Cathy Gray because he kept seeing the same pattern: businesses with genuine ambition held back by strategy, people, and systems that were not working together. AI was accelerating the gap.

Cathy co-founded Humainify to bring strategic rigour to the human side of business change. With a background spanning business transformation, leadership development, and AI integration, Cathy has spent her career working at the intersection of people, strategy, and systems. Her work helps leaders build the capability to sustain transformation long after an engagement ends.

Her work in leadership development shapes Humainify's coaching and advisory approach: the belief that lasting change comes from building genuine capability in leaders, not delivering external solutions that disappear when the consultant leaves. That philosophy runs through every engagement.

Cathy's experience in AI adoption brings the strategic lens that helps clients move from awareness to action by translating complex technology trends into practical, human centred plans that organisations can actually implement and own.

Our Framework

The HEART Framework

Our proprietary framework integrates occupational health psychology, engagement science, and strategic management into five measurable dimensions. Every Humainify engagement is built around these pillars because sustainable business performance requires all five to work together.

Health

Organisational and people wellbeing as the foundation of business performance. Wellbeing is not a soft metric. It drives retention, productivity, and the capacity to execute strategy.

Engagement

People who are motivated, purposeful, and genuinely connected to the work. Engagement is the difference between a team that complies and a team that commits. It shows up directly in results.

Alignment

Strategy, operations, culture, and people all moving in the same direction. When alignment breaks, effort is wasted at every level. No amount of AI or process improvement can compensate for it.

Resilience

The capacity to adapt, absorb pressure, and grow through complexity. For businesses navigating AI change, market shifts, and workforce pressure, resilience is not a nice to have. It is a competitive requirement.

Trust

Leadership credibility, psychological safety, and the conditions that make genuine change possible. High-trust organisations move faster, retain people longer, and adopt new ways of working more successfully.

Our Approach

Evidence first. Practically sized. Built to last.

We anchor everything to research, legislation, and Australian business data. We work with SMEs and lean budget organisations because that is where the gap between ambition and execution is greatest and where good advice has the most impact.

What we anchor to

  • WHS legislation: Safe Work Australia Psychosocial Hazard Code of Practice, Model WHS Regulations
  • Engagement research: Gallup Q12, Harvard Psychological Safety (Edmondson)
  • Trust & leadership: Brown, Covey's Speed of Trust
  • Business evidence: PwC, Deloitte, EY Australian benchmarks
  • AI adoption: National AI Centre, Decidr National AI Readiness Index
  • Workforce data: AHRI, Safe Work Australia
Our Experience

Twenty years inside real organisations

Humainify's depth comes from experience at every level, from frontline practice through to the executive table and the boardroom. That breadth is deliberate.

Commercial Operations & Business Advisory

Direct operational experience running commercial services businesses with P&L accountability, including training delivery, event medical services, and retail operations within a complex organisation. That background informs advisory work grounded in the commercial realities SME owners face: revenue pressure, workforce costs, and the need to build genuine capability without enterprise scale resources.

Health & Community Services

Deep experience across community health, aged care, disability support, mental health, and NFP organisations. From small community providers to large, complex organisations working across multiple sites. We have worked inside these organisations at every level, not just consulted to them.

Change & Business Transformation

Experience guiding organisations through significant change: growth, AI adoption, digital transformation, and structural shifts that require sustained, people-centred leadership to hold together and land well.

Frontline to Board Level

Our perspective spans every level: direct service delivery, operational management, executive leadership, and board governance. That range, from frontline worker to CEO and COO, is where Humainify's practical grounding comes from. It is why our advice is rarely theoretical.

What We Believe

Our principles

Clarity before complexity

We start with the simplest useful thing. We don't overwhelm leaders with frameworks and jargon. We give you a clear picture of where things stand and one practical next step.

Evidence, not opinion

Every recommendation we make is grounded in research, data, or measurable business evidence. We don't trade in gut feel. We trade in things you can act on and report to your board.

Human first, always

Technology is a tool. Strategy is a plan. But behind every metric is a human being whose experience at work determines whether any of it actually works.
